Promotions apply a percentage-based or fixed-amount discount at checkout, targeting either the entire basket total or specific basket items.

THE ESSENTIALS

Firstly, let’s take a look at some common terms used in regard to Promotions.

State

Promotions can have one of two states:

  • Active - The promotion can be applied as long as the order is placed within the promotion’s Availability period and meets the required conditions.

  • Inactive - The promotion is currently unavailable.

Availability

The time period during which the promotion is applied when contacts place orders within this window.

Promotions for termed services may include recurring discounts for a set period of time. These discounts will still be applied even after the promotion ends for new subscription orders.

For recurring services, the discount continues for the life of the subscription, even after the promotion's end date.

Conditions

The conditions which must be met for the promotion to apply. Choose from Contacts (who is eligible), Locations (where the order must take place), Timings (specific days and/or times) and Basket (required items in the order).

Offerings

The promotion discount. Can be set as either a percentage or a fixed amount, and it can apply to the entire order or to selected items only. For service-based promotions, all service conditions must be maintained - if these are violated, the promotion will be discontinued.

Currency

The currency of the promotion. In multi-currency setups, a separate promotion must be created for each supported currency so that all Contacts can access the promotion in their currency.


Managing Promotions

To view or manage Promotions, navigate to Commerce > Promotions using the main menu on the left-hand side of the screen. Promotions are only available at the Business level.

Creating a New Promotion

Select Create Promotion from the summary screen and provide the necessary information.

Name

The promotion name is visible on the front-end when ordering, and on financial transactions e.g. an Invoice.

Image

Upload an image for the Promotion. Images are visible on the front-end.

Tags

Select one or more tags for the promotion. These can be used for filtering purposes in back- and front-end systems and also for Analytics purposes. Find out more about Tags in the Generic Settings manual.

Currency

The currency of the promotion. To be eligible for the promotion, the Contact’s currency must be the same as the promotion’s currency, so in multi-currency setups, you must configure a separate version of the promotion for each supported currency. The Copy option can simplify this setup.

Availability

Define the duration of the Promotion's availability. To be eligible for the promotion, contacts must place an order during this period.

Short & Long Description

Promotion descriptions appear on the front end and inform Contacts of the conditions required to qualify for a promotion, such as which products to purchase and when. Clear and detailed explanations are recommended to ensure clarity.

Conditions and Offerings

Now set the conditions that must be fulfilled to benefit from the promotion, along with the discount offered.

Contacts

Specify which Contacts are eligible for the Promotion, choose from a specific Contact or contacts in one or more Segments. Not specifying either of these implies that All Contacts can get the discount.

If a promotion is valid for a specific contact, it will also appear on the Contact screen.

Locations

Specify the offer's location conditions, such as particular Merchants, Venues, Countries, etc. where the order must take place for the Promotion to apply.

Timings

Select specific periods, months, days or time conditions when an order must be placed for the promotion to apply. If none are specified, then the Promotion is valid on all days and times.

Basket

Optionally, specify the payment method and any supply conditions for the promotion, as well as the applicable basket conditions. These may include basket amount, number of items, and specific products to be included in the checkout basket.

When offering termed services to your contacts, you can optionally configure additional conditions related to their price terms such as their Billing Cycle or Contract Period. Additionally, include prerequisite services, i.e. the Contact must already be subscribed to certain services to qualify for the discount.

Offerings

Set the promotion discount amount or percentage to be applied to the whole basket or selected products.

Termed Subscriber Discounts

When configuring offerings for termed services, an additional setting is required to define how long the discount will be applied to the contact’s recurring billing. There are two options:

  • Fixed duration - The discount is applied in one of the following ways:

    • One-Time - Applied only to the first invoice for the service(s).

    • Period - Applied repeatedly for a defined number of billing periods after service ordering

    • Forever - Continues for the entire lifetime of the service, unless it's churned.

  • Variable discounts - The discount amount gradually changes over time. The key setting is to establish multiple periods throughout a service’s maturity, each applying a different discount.

Activating a Promotion

Once the Promotion has been created it is Inactive and must be activated to become effective. This can be done from the Promotions summary screen using the respective Promotion's Options button ().

The promotion is applied only at the time of ordering and if within the availability period.

ATTENTION

Special attention should be paid to promotions for services. They are applied both when placing a new order and when making changes to an existing service (e.g., upgrade). Once applied, the promotion continues on a recurring basis as long as the service meets all defined conditions. If any condition is violated, the promotion is automatically discontinued.

Promotions & Reward Offers

Promotions and Rewards Offers can co-exist when ordering, meaning that if a Contact is eligible for both a Promotion and a Reward Offer, they will receive both.

Example:

A Business configures a Promotion offer for a 10% discount on the total basket amount and also has a standard 10% cashback Reward Offer. If a Contact (who’s eligible for both) places an order, the 10% Promotion discount will be applied instantly to the basket. When the Purchase Event is created, the Contact will also receive a 10% cashback on the discounted amount.

Copying Promotions

Easily copy an existing promotion. When copying, the new promotion can be in the same currency, or you can choose to copy and select a different currency from the list of your enabled currencies.
